Our History

Open Door Baptist Church was begun in 1981. Many of its original members attended First Baptist Church of Morehead City and began a missions group utilizing the local community center. Subsequently, the church became a chartered fellowship and developed a constitution and mission statement under the auspices of the Southern Baptist Convention and local Atlantic Baptist Association. It adopted the statement of the Baptist Faith and Message.

Eventually, the land where the current church is located was purchased. Through cooperative help of charter members along with the state and national organizations, Open Door Baptist Church was born. The other buildings on the property, the youth building having been the original pavilion and tabernacle, were later enclosed and/or built.

The first pastor of the church was the Rev. Dr. Howard Knight. He had previously been with First Baptist Church of Morehead and was pivotal in beginning the effort here. Several pastors have served here since Dr. Knight, each leaving their mark on the church and its members.
